“The  Cordle Family”

Written by:  Mrs. Shirley Cordle

This is the history of the home at 125 West Grand Avenue, Jackson, Tennessee, as told to me by Mrs. Spence Truex in February, 1982.  Mrs. Truex’s family lived in the house for 41 years.

The house was built in 1900, an 8 room, 2 hall, 2 bath, weather board on lots 13, 14, and 15 in the Lane subdivision.

The first owner was Robert Mayo, sheriff of Madison County.  He sold it to Dr. George Crutcher and the Crutcher family sold it to Spencer Truex, owner of Truex Chevrolet.  The Truex family moved into the home in January 1918.  His two sons were reared in the house.  Ben, the oldest son, was 1 ½ years old.  The Truex family lived at 125 West Grand until November 1958.

During the years, the Truex family bricked the outside and added the showers to both baths.  They also remodeled the mud room that opened out to the back alley.  Mrs. Truex said the mud room “was worthless” and that she did not like it – but she loved the house!

The house was sold to Mr. Palmer who sold it to Mr. Shannon in 1963

The Cordles bought the house in August of 1976.  We did $10,000 worth of work on the house and did most of the work ourselves.  We added a patio on the back and a small side porch on the west side.  We also added a carport.

Our family has always preferred older houses.  This house has served us well.  The highlight of each year has been at Christmas when all the family and friends have had plenty of room to gather together to celebrate.

Mr. Gary Autry, of Humboldt, has been Mrs. Cordle's gardener for the last five years.
